theatre casting director
audition coach

Laura Schutzel in her casting office.

During nearly 20 years at Tara Rubin casting (NYC), I've worked alongside the theatre-makers whose names are atop the marquees that matter. I've arranged and participated in thousands of auditions and followed the many paths an actor's career can take. As an experienced NYC casting director, I know what makes an audition great and what makes an actor memorable.

When you audition for a play, you are not just auditioning for that one project: you are auditioning for every project the entire team ever does. Forever. Auditioning well is a crucial part of your work. It is more than "booking a job;" it is about career longevity.

Unlike other audition coaches, working with me is not an invitation to engage in happy, positive feelings so you can magically "book more jobs." Rather, we can demystify the process and focus on results. Together, we approach auditioning as an opportunity to do your best work in the allotted time and establish yourself as an actor and creator.

MEET LAURA

My goal as a casting director is to make space for the vision of others, finding actors who best tell the story the creative team wants told while advocating for the whole artist.

Between 2003 and 2020, I enjoyed a great career in theatrical casting at Tara Rubin Casting in NYC, working on Broadway, off-Bway, and regionally.

Seventeen years is a solid run, and it was time to focus on what I like doing most: helping actors make a great impression and establish a positive reputation. This is the proper work of an audition coach.

The tried and true path to career longevity is through purposeful auditions. The team behind the table has a long memory (trust me, I know)! My goal is for you to make the most of the time you have in the room. It is about more than "booking the job." It is about building your career.
